Kristin, Reflection 5 Part II

After reading the ISTE standards, I can see many connections between them and the technology resources that I posted. One of the most obvious connections that I see is that the science standards emphasize a stronger education that builds connections between science and technology. By incorporating these websites and the videos and services that they offer in my classroom, I will be able to create better correlations between the two topics in the eyes of my students. Also, the science standards encourage a more hands-on approach to science. By using videos that explain difficult concepts such as the structure of an atom, my students will more actively learn about topics and not just label them as difficult concepts that are only explained through a textbook. A final connection that I see between the ISTE standards and the technology resources that I posted is that the standards encourage a system of inquiry in science courses. These websites also encourage students to ask questions. They pose questions to students and let them search for the answers by watching video clips. I think that all of these technology resources would be extremely effective in building connections between science and technology as well as corresponding to the ISTE standards.

Kristin, Resources

In class this week, we learned more about the various areas of technology that can be used in the classroom. I think that it is essential, especially in a science classroom, to utilize technology to its fullest. Technology can be extremely effective in helping students new to chemistry to better comprehend a difficult subject. I found three different websites that I believe will be effective in improving my students' education in my future science classroom. The first of these websites is http://www.learner.org/resources/browse.html?discipline=6. On this website teachers can gain access to a variety of materials as well as videos that correspond to these videos. I think that this would be helpful because when I talk about complicated molecule in class I could utilize this website to show students what these molecules actually look like. Also, many of the videos available on this website are free for use by teachers. A second website that I found useful was http://www.sciencedaily.com/videos/matter_energy/inorganic_chemistry/. I liked this website because it relates its stories to scientific advancements that are currently taking place. I would use this in my classroom by having students watch the free video clips that discuss modern science in everyday life and then have them do more research about the topic on their own. Thus, they will begin to see how science is related to their everyday life. A third website that I would use in my future class would be http://education.jlab.org/atomtour/. On this website students can interact and see a 3D model of an atom. It asks them questions and helps them to better understand the structure of an atom. I would use this website so that my students could actively learn about the atom instead of just reading about it in a text book.

Reflection 5 part II

I see a connection between my technology choices and the standards because the standards say that the students should understand how to use technology resources. These websites are resources that the students can use to gain a better understanding of chemistry. These websites promote creativity and productivity because they allow for the students to use their imagination in learning chemistry. The videos and animations allow them to view chemistry in a different light that will allow them to gain a deeper understanding. These websites all enhance learning because they show an in-depth view of chemistry, and allows the students to see chemistry on a different level. This allows the students to use a variety of resources to learn, which the standards states is a good way to integrate technology into the classroom. These websites also allow the students to process data because it allows them to reiterate what they are learning in class. Overall, these websites are a good way of integrating technology because they closely follow the standards established for technology in the classroom.

Reflection 5

One website I found was called The World of Chemistry. The URL for this website is http://www.learner.org/resources/series61.html . This website offers free videos to show in a classroom and offers ideas on how to use these videos in your classroom. It offers videos on everything related to chemistry from color to molecules to the periodic table. This can be used in an educational setting to show experiments that are not done in class, or it can be used to further explain a topic discussed in class.

The next website I found offers a place to view chemical reactions through animation and detailed explanations of each step of the reaction. The URL for this website is http://www.chem.iastate.edu/group/Greenbowe/sections/projectfolder/animationsindex.htm . This website would be useful in the classroom because it allows the students to further understand what happens in a chemical reaction. They are able to see, step by step, what occurs. This is not always easy when seeing the reaction first hand. The animation offers a 3-D view of the reaction as well, rather than seeing it drawn out on a piece of paper.

The third website I found was about the periodic table. This is an interactive website that allows you to learn more about each element. It offers general information about the element and also has some videos that describe reactions involving this element. It offers links to real-life situations so that students will be better able to memorize the periodic table. It is a useful tool when students are trying to memorize the periodic table. The URL for this website is http://www.webelements.com/ .

Reflection for Week 5

Today in class we learned about technologies and there standards. We also were taught some ways of finding appropriate sources for your students. Here is a website with science experiments that incorporate my students world with the information trying to be taught, http://www.exploratorium.com/baseball/. This could be useful to tie my students outside world with learning inside of the school building. Another useful technology that could be incorporated in the classroom is youtube. This site allows you to find videos that could be used while teaching a topic and keeping the students entertained. Here is a video describing mitosis, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ilvS85LTEY or you can show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frrJWds3knc&mode=related&search=. This video can be useful because it incorporates visual aid of this experience with entertaining music. A third type of technology which could be used http://www.beelib.com/bee/jsp/us/movies.jsp. Here you can choose various different types of educational videos that can be used while teaching a certain topic to your students

Reflection

I enjoy using the team blog. It allows me to communicate to others in my class and learn what they are thinking. It is a good way to keep up with what is going on. Creating websites is a useful tool that I feel can be used later in my own classroom. Websites allow for students to access information from home in order to find out anything they have missed. Creating a website is easier than I thought. I did not realize it could be this easy. I don't really have any questions about using team blogs or websites, it seems like a fairly simple process.
